Who This Program Is For — and What It Covers

Age and Homeownership Requirements

To be eligible for Aging in Place assistance, you must be 65 years of age or older and own the home where modifications will be made. The home must be your primary residence, located within the City of Danville or Pittsylvania County, Virginia.

Income Guidelines

This program is designed for homeowners on fixed or modest incomes who could not otherwise afford safety modifications. Income limits are based on household size and are set in accordance with HUD area median income guidelines for the Danville region. We encourage you to apply even if you are uncertain — our team will review your situation and let you know where you stand.

What Modifications Are Included

Aging in Place focuses on safety and accessibility improvements that help you move through your home with greater confidence and reduced risk. Eligible modifications include:

 

  • Grab bars in bathrooms and along stairways
  • Wheelchair ramps and threshold ramps for entry access
  • Improved lighting in hallways, stairwells, and high-use areas
  • Door handle and fixture upgrades for easier use
  • Other targeted modifications based on assessed need

 

This is not a general home-repair program. We do not provide roof replacements, plumbing repairs, HVAC work, or structural repairs through Aging in Place. If you have questions about what qualifies, please reach out before applying.

Geographic Eligibility

Your home must be located within the City of Danville or anywhere in Pittsylvania County — including communities such as Chatham and Gretna. If you are unsure whether your address falls within our service area, call us at (434) 793-3630 and we will confirm for you.

We want to be clear about the scope of this program so you can find the right help for your needs. Aging in Place does not cover general home repairs, emergency repairs, or cosmetic improvements. Commonly requested services that fall outside this program include roof work, plumbing repairs, electrical upgrades, HVAC replacement, and foundation or structural issues.
